Integrative Diagnosis™ Physicians

Integrative DiagnosisIntegrative Diagnosis providers are experts in treating the musculoskeletal system and getting to the root cause of your pain, not just treating the symptoms. At Balanced Body Soft Tissue & Spine, we understand the importance of an accurate diagnosis and getting patients appropriate care, even if it’s not with us. Dr. Danielle Hommer is the Ankeny physician of choice for conservative management of full-body musculoskeletal conditions. Aside from MAR (manual adhesion release) and IAR (instrument adhesion release), our services include exercise recommendations, guidance on activities to avoid, ergonomic recommendations and lifestyle counseling to stabilize or eliminate your condition.

We are not a ‘traditional’ chiropractic office by design. Our ideal patient has some or all of the following: a recurring pain/injury, poor or incomplete resolution from other options (chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy, injections, previous surgery), a desire to avoid surgery, or an interest in improving athletic performance or regaining fitness. Regardless of age or activity level, a large percentage of the population would benefit from Integrative Diagnosis treatments as adhesion is the most fixable musculoskeletal condition in the human body. Adolescents are especially vulnerable to structural damage later in life as untreated injuries at this stage in development puts excessive stress on their bodies. This in turn increases the likelihood for larger problems as they continue to mature — something Dr. Hommer has become all too familiar with in practice.

If your medical doctor doesn’t know what’s wrong with you, your chiropractor hasn’t fixed you, or you’ve failed with physical therapy, contact our office and let us diagnose and properly treat your problem.

Integrative Diagnosis focuses on soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia) and neurological integrity, and aims to favorably impact the most functional motions in the human body which in turn relieves pain, enhances performance, and improves quality of life without drugs or surgery. It is the only complete system for diagnosis and conservative treatment of muscle, nerve and joint problems.

Manual Adhesion Release (MAR) and Instrument Adhesion Release (IAR) are soft tissue treatment techniques using either the hands or an instrument. Both of these techniques are used at Balanced Body Soft Tissue & Spine to treat soft tissue due to overuse injuries and chronic areas of dysfunction.

Soft tissue injuries can occur in many different ways. They most commonly stem from direct acute trauma (like pulls, tears, or collisions) or prolonged contraction (like sitting at a desk all day or a demanding schedule when training for a race). These assaults to the soft tissue will lead to a lack of oxygen in the involved structures. As a result, the body will cause dense, fibrotic (think scar-like) tissue to accumulate in the affected areas, known as adhesion.

Adhesion is the most common, most under-diagnosed, and luckily, the most reversible problem in the musculoskeletal system. Adhesion makes the soft tissue weaker and less flexible and can sometimes act like glue between structures, preventing proper movement and hampering function. Nerves can also become entrapped by these adhesions and cause pain, numbness, and weakness; most commonly people report this as a ‘pinched nerve’. MAR and IAR gradually break down these adhesions over a series of treatments to help restore movement and function to the affected area.

Treatment necessity is determined in the Integrative Diagnosis system via a detailed history of the problem, baseline movement assessments and palpation of affected soft tissue structures. Once a proper diagnosis of your problem is established, specific structures will be treated with MAR, IAR, or a combination of the two depending on the area being treated. After treatment, patients are put through the same movement assessments prior to treatment to analyze response to treatment. Effective treatment typically results in immediate improvement felt by the patient and over time demonstrated in the movement assessments. Identifying the correct tissue and effectively treating it bridges the gap between temporary and permanent relief associated with basic chiropractic care, corrective exercises and other soft tissue techniques (ART®, Graston, IASTM).

Balanced Body Soft Tissue & Spine takes special care to understand the unique needs of each patient’s condition. We request that you bring copies of any CTs, X-rays, MRIs or any other relevant test results that may be related to your condition and fill out our new patient intake at least 48 hours prior to your appointment. Please wear loose-fitting clothes (no skirts or jeans). If you have a neck, shoulder or mid-back complaint, we prefer you wear a tank top (please avoid racer back styles). If you have a lower extremity complaint (hip, knee or foot) please wear shorts. Your initial visit will take 30-45 minutes and will consist of:

  • Relevant Health Background
  • History of the Current Problem

  • Neurological Evaluation and Orthopedic Testing
  • Integrative Diagnosis Functional Movement Assessments
  • Palpation of Restricted Tissues
  • Condition Diagnosis and Treatment Options (should your condition require a referral to another provider we will gladly refer you on)
  • Discussion of any Questions or Concerns you may have with Treatment

On the initial visit and follow-up treatments, Dr. Dani will focus on one area of complaint at a time to allow for the best outcomes.

We are in-network providers for Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO insurance plans (not HMOs) and some United Healthcare plans. Please call your insurance company using the number found on the back of the card prior to scheduling to avoid any confusion concerning your benefits. We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding finances and insurance but encourage you to call your insurance company for any specifics as every healthcare company and plan are different. If you would like to provide your insurance information 72 hours prior to your initial visit, we may be able to estimate the cost of treatment before your visit.
